Gaza Strip Conflict

There will always be a war in the holy land. The reason...
The Gaza Strip (Arabic: قطاع غزة‎ transliteration: Qiṭɑʿ Ġazza/Qita' Ghazzah, Hebrew: רצועת עזה‎ Retzu'at 'Azza) is a coastal strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea governed by Hamas. It borders Egypt on the south-west and Israel on the north and east. It is about 41 kilometers (25 mi) long, and between 6 and 12 kilometers (4–7.5 mi) wide, with a total area of 360 square kilometers (139 sq mi). The area is not recognized internationally as part of any sovereign country but is claimed by the Palestinian National Authority as part of the Palestinian territories. Since the June 2007 battle of Gaza, actual control of the area is in the hands of the Hamas de facto government.

Israel
, which governed the Gaza Strip from 1967-2005, still controls the strip's airspace, territorial water, and offshore maritime access, as well as its side of the Gaza-Israeli border. This continued control has allowed the Israeli state, which opposes Hamas, to control the Gazan inflow and outflow of multiple types of resources, including food. Whenever food is in short supply, Gazans have had little choice but to take in food supplied by World Food Programme workers in the area. Egypt governed the Gaza Strip from 1948-1967 and today runs the southern border between the Gaza strip and the Sinai desert, a border now famous for the breach in early 2008.

The territory takes its name from Gaza, its main city. It has about 1.4 million Palestinian Arab (or Gazan) residents.[1]

so far nearly 300 Palestinians have been killed by the air strikes. Israel bombing on Saturday. They are targeting terroists and Hamas and Islamic group who have been shooting rockets daily. Israle hopes to reoccupy the Gaza strip.
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Warplanes pressing one of the Israel's deadliest assaults ever against Palestinian militants widened their sights on Sunday, dropping bombs on smuggling tunnels that are a major weapons pipeline for the Gaza Strip's Islamic Hamas rulers.

Israel's Cabinet authorized the military to call up 6,500 reserve soldiers for a possible ground invasion and moved tanks, infantry and armored units to the Gaza border. Since it began Saturday, Israel's offensive against Gaza rocket squads has been carried out exclusively from the air.

Crowds of Gazans, backed by a bulldozer, breached the border wall with Egypt to escape the chaos. Syria, reflecting the rage in the Arab world over Israel's aerial onslaught, broke off indirect peace talks with the Jewish state.

The airstrikes, which initially targeted Hamas security compounds, killed more than 280 Palestinians and wounded hundreds more in its first 24 hours, said Gaza health official Dr. Moaiya Hassanain. A Palestinian human rights group said among 251 dead it counted, 20 were children under 16 and nine were women

Harlem Children's Zone

It's weird how some things in life keep reappearing. About 3 years ago Syracuse University honored Geoffrey Canada at the annual Dr Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. My sister and I attended as undergrads and we were both affected by Geoffrey Canada's activism in his community. My sister purchased his book "Fist Knife Stick Gun" which chronicled his childhood and his efforts to give back to his community.

My husbands Aunt is currently writing a play and kept talking about a African American Charter school that her main character is developing. I thought that sounded similar to Canada's School. She said yeah "Geoff Canada!" He grew up in our neighborhood in the Bronx. He used to run with my brother!" Then last week I was watching Colbert and Canada was discussing the Harlem Children's Zone. The Zone main goal is to end generational poverty. It teaches children from Infancy until they are 18. I was so interested in the school, I began to cry (Hormones!) because it reminded me of the efforts of the Equal Opportunity Program I was a part of. It helps poverty stricken and disadvantages young adults go to college by providing financial, motivational and educational support. I was thinking wow someone gave me a chance and now others will have a chance like me. Canada even stated that President Obama came to visit the Zone and wanted to create more like it all over the country.

So this holiday season please reflect on all your blessings. I hope some one is interested in enrolling their child or will volunteer their time to helping others. Happy holidays!

John Walsh's son1981 murder solved

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A serial killer who died more than a decade ago is the person who decapitated the 6-year-old son of "America's Most Wanted" host John Walsh in 1981, police in Florida said Tuesday. The announcement brought to a close a case that has vexed the Walsh family for more than two decades, launched the television show about the nation's most notorious criminals and inspired changes in how authorities search for missing children.

"Who could take a 6-year-old and murder and decapitate him? Who?" an emotional John Walsh said at Tuesday's news conference. "We needed to know. We needed to know. And today we know. The not knowing has been a torture, but that journey's over.Walsh's wife, Reve, at one point placed a small photo of their son on the podium.

Police named Ottis Toole, saying he was long the prime suspect in the case and that they had conclusively linked him to the killing. They declined to be specific about their evidence and did not note any DNA proof of the crime, but said an extensive review of the case file pointed only to Toole, as John Walsh long contended.

Recession saving tips!

Since we are feeling the crunch this season here are a few of my money saving tips.

-Cancel Netflix and use NYPL or Brooklyn Library to rent movies. They have a pretty extensive collection. and if your local library doesn't have the flick you want you can request it. FREE

-Get as much sugar packets from Starbucks of Dunkin Donuts. I have a jar full of Splenda.

-Shop online. You can find great deal on ebay and Amazon. I got a cute Dior shirt for like 10$

-Sell your crap. Sell stuff you don't use like old dvds, books, last season's coach bags. Ebay, Amazon, or a resale boutique like A Second Chance Boutique in Manhattan. All the dollars add up.

-Spend the nights @ home. Or at friends house. Every one bring a dish and booze. Play cards or a Wii game. Watch the Dark Night on your BFF's flat screen. It's fun and economical.

-Bored? Go to all the museums exhibits, talkshows, park events that you can. They are free!

Happy savings!

Bratz dolls gone forever?

Basically Mattel was trying to figure out how to shut down it's competition. A former Mattel designer sold the concept to MGA while he was still employed. Personally I think Bratz are cooler than Barbies. They are hip, Multi-ethnic and I love that they have huge heads and no "idealized" body type. I mean Barbie is like 30 years old, a blonde Cali girl with pointy boobs.

OS ANGELES (Reuters) – A federal judge in California on Wednesday ordered MGA Entertainment Inc to stop selling its popular Bratz dolls and banned it from using the Bratz name, finding that "hundreds" of Bratz products infringe on copyrights owned by rival toymaker Mattel Inc (MAT.N).

U.S. District Judge Stephen Larson also ordered MGA to recall all Bratz dolls from retailers and to destroy "specialized plates, molds and matrices" used to make the dolls, according to a permanent injunction issued late on Wednesday, but stayed until at least early next year.

The ruling appears to allow MGA and retailers to sell the Bratz dolls through the Christmas holiday season.

Larson rejected the idea of allowing MGA to continue to make the pouty lipped, urban chic dolls that made its name and fortunes while paying Mattel a royalty. Larson set a February 11 hearing on post-trial motions.

"Mattel has established its exclusive rights to the Bratz drawings and the court has found that hundreds of the MGA parties' products -- including all the currently available core female fashion dolls Mattel was able to locate in the marketplace -- infringe those rights," Larson wrote in the ruling.

Mattel won the rights to the $1 billion-plus Bratz franchise earlier this year in a lawsuit against MGA and former Mattel Barbie designer Carter Bryant, who invented the Bratz concept while under contract to Mattel.

A jury later ruled Bryant had secretly sold the concept to MGA.

Say it aint so Plaxico!

The Giants have suspended and fined receiver Plaxico Burress for the rest of the season. Plax is missing out on about 800.000 dollars and not playing in the playoffs. He shot himself in the thigh last weekend at Latin Quarters nightclub(which is kind of hood anyway. He is being charged with two counts of illegal weapons possessions which he could serve 3 to 15 yrs in jail. The wound will take about 6 weeks to heal.
Burress is a fool!
He was at the height of his career, with a SuperBowl ring, a 11-1 winning season with the best team in the NFL right now. He threw it all away. Didn't you see what happened to T.I....Michael Vick...OJ? Come on dude, The D.A. is going to make an example out of you and punish you to the fullest extent of the law.
Antonio Pierce (linebacker) is also being question for his role. He drove Burress to NY Presbyterian and put the gun in glove compartment.(why?)
Let's home this fiasco will not ruin Big Blues winning streak.

MTA bus driver killed in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN (CBS) ― Police said a New York City bus driver was stabbed to death Monday afternoon by a rider apparently angry over not receiving a free transfer.

The driver of the B-46 bus, identified as 46-year-old Edwin Thomas, was operating the bus in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn and picked up the suspect around 12:30 p.m. Monday at Malcolm X Boulevard near Gates Avenue.

Police said the man swiped an invalid fare card and sat down on the bus, then asked for a transfer slip usually available to riders.

After living in the city for over 20 years, I've encountered nice bus drivers like Thomas. Some drivers are cool and let you slide when your card is jammed up, but how are you going to expect a free transfer when you didn't pay in the first place. I hope they find this deranged individual and he gets 25 to life upstate. If this was the early 90's I bet someone on the bus would have pulled a piece on the suspect. This is similar to a case in Canada on the GREYHOUND bus. A you man decapiated another man on the bus. He began stabbing his victim and everyone ran off the bus. The two were locked in and the man proceeded to remove the victims heads and began displaying it to shocked passengers.
Please be aware of your surroundings! Put the ipod on low people.

Last night the stars were out to celebrate the premiere of the anticipated film Cadillac Records. The movie stars Adrien Brody, Jefferey Wright, Beyonce, Mos def and Gabrielle Union. Other celebs were spotted on the red carpet as well, Kelly Ripa & Mark Consuelos, Jay-z, Akon, Diddy, Tamara Tunie,

The film, directed by Darnell Martin depicts the rise of Chess records and it's phenomenal artists, Muddy Waters, Etta James,Howlin' Wolf and Chuck Berry. It opens on Friday December 5th. After the success of Ray, films about black musicians are being shown on the silver screen. They all have been critically acclaimed and box office hits. (ie Dreamgirls)SO far I've read a review from the Associated Press and it wasn't that great. I'm still willing to pay 11 dollars to support a black film. I already know B is not a great actress but hopefully she singing throughout the movie.

Tragedy in Mumbai

After three days of horrific violence, Indian police have ended the terror in the vast city of Mumbai (formerly Bombay). All except one suspect was killed. 195 lives were lost, mostly Indian citizens. There was no live footage shown on television so most reports were about 5 hours behind. I kept watching CNN and noticed how scences were shown at night when clearly it was daytime in the country. I hope and pray that the country will recover.

Black Friday Madness

A 34 year old WALMART employee was killed this morning as shoppers trampled over him. The Queens native worked at the Valley Stream store in LI, and was swarmed by anxious shoppers who could not wait for the doors to open. Two other people were injured including a pregnant woman. This is not the first black Friday incident that has occured at the store. My sister went to the store 3 years ago and gad to leave quickly because shoppers began fighting. I don't understand why people are so blinded by low prices they begin to lose all sense of judgment. I suggest sitting at home and shopping online. Why wait in the cold over night with no access to a toilet and snooze on the pavement. Sure the prices are great but do you need another 32 inch TV or the latest ipod for little Jimmy? Use that money and pay down your credit card or have a gift swap with friends. Americans are overindulgent no wonder we are in a state of disaster.

Tuesday with Maury (and Martha)

Today I finally attended a taping of The Maury Povich Show. It was everything I expected and more. We got there a little after 8 am and waited outside till 9:15.We then were hustled inside Penn Plaza and waited till about 10 am. An irate lady wanted to see the show but couldn't wait until 11:30. Like she had someplace to go.
Once we got inside it was like a circus. The audience was so wild;shouting out whatever was on the mind. We even got to dance on stage. It was a hoot. Maury was a great host. He only had to do one take. He even chatted with us between segments. My wish came true and we were treated to a paternity show. The audience was predictable, booing screaming and laughing at the guest. The guests were being coached by the producers to be angry. One mother was so pissed that her 17 yr teen daughter 's child was being denied. Her daughter got knocked up at 13. I wanted to yell oh please sit yo' a*$ down.
When ever Maury gave the results it was magical We laughed and screamed. Complete chaos! People are hugging and jumping out of their seats. Now I know why the show is still on the air. We were feed pizza and sent on our way.
After coming down from the Maury high my freinds and I decided to go visit the Tyra Show. They were on vacay but we got grabbed by a Martha Stewart producer. It was a completely different experience. Mainly older moms and out-of-towners. There was coat check and Evian in a beautiful waiting room. The set was amazingly decorated in warm ochres and cheerful holiday trinkets. The audience wasn't as lively as the previous show. But I felt an overall feeling of happiness and tranquility. We were entertained by a comedian and a old lady dancing to Rhianna.
Martha looked much younger in person. She was a gracious host, warm and friendly. We learned how to make a buttered bass and plastic snowflakes. We recieved a coupon for free custom gift wrap!
Next week I'm trying Tyra again. Report coming soon.

Proposition 8 not so Great

Gay marriage was banned in California, Florida and Arizona. Prop 8 in Cali would amend the states constitution and recognize only same sex marriage. WHY?
According to Wiki pedia...

"The proponents argued for exclusively heterosexual marriage while claiming that failure to change the constitution would require changes to school curriculum and threaten church tax benefits. The opponents argued that eliminating the rights of any Californian and mandating that one group of people be treated differently from everyone else was unfair and wrong."

According to the Mormons
"California members consider it a directive from God and have pressured others to participate. Some leaders and members see it as a test of faith and loyalty. "
"Our doctrine affirms that marriage is important to Heavenly Father's plan of action on Earth," he said. "It is the center of religion. We also believe [traditional] marriage is good for society."
(just google Mormons and prop 8)

Bill Maher says Blcks votes yes because "They love them some JESUS!"

Here are Prop 8 arguments-
Preservation of marriage and what is stands for, Protecting children from being taught gay marriage is the same as regular marriage, Marriage as a essential part of society.

What it comes down to is religion. In the Bible, God created Adam & Eve. The book of Leviticus clearly states homosexuality is a sin. This covers Judaism and Christianity.
In Islam(the most practiced religion in the world) there is the story of Lot(Lut) and God's wrath on the Sodomites.

So why can't Gays get married...because GOD SAYS SO.
I thought there was separation of Church and state.
Our politicians appear to be carrying out the laws of the Lord. SOUNDS FAMILAR?

...SLAVERY? WOMEN'S REPRESSION.
Well guess what America lets really police God's law
No sex before marriage, Don't commit adultery, Wives submit to your husbands, leave your hair uncut.
I even saw a BLOG that Jesus made the OLD TESTAMENT RULES NULL AND VOID.

I'm not going to pass judgment on anyone, I 'm simply trying to understand the way our society works. And I still don't know and probably never will.

Is Brooklyn in the house?

Well this is my first attempt at a BLOG. I hope it will be successful. I will mainly write about my favorite topics, fashion, food and my family! A little bit of gossip and politics as well.
I am a young woman who grew up in East NY, Brooklyn and made it out unscathed. I was a total nerd and secretly had a passion for fashion as a little girl. I mainly stayed focused on my school work and in church. I was always active in something. Girlscouts, Choir, usher board, school projects.
Back in the 80's and 90's ENY was not the safest or prosperous community in the five boroughs. I always had to watch my back. So I was elated when I was accepted to Syracuse University in 2002. I worked hard my 17 years in life and couldn't wait to go live and learn in upstate New York. I graduated with honors in 2006 and began to work as a costume designer for the next two years. In 08 I, moved th the Bronx, got married and pregnant in a 4 month time frame. (CRAZY). I still do freelance sewing but I mainly stay at home waiting for my son Michael JR. to make his debut. We have 11 weeks to go. Until then, I'll be planning and plotting. Ta Ta for now!
